My Response to “You’re White and Marched with Dr. King: So what?”

ImaniImani Gandy who writes “Angry Black Lady Chronicles” is angry at Bernie Sanders. She excoriates him profanely for his admittedly poor response to activists at the Netroots Conference who disrupted first Martin O’Malley and then Sanders and mocks his involvement in the civil rights movement.  Here’s my response to Ms. Gandy.  Any discussion with or at Bernie Sanders about race should start as follows:

Senator Sanders – I support your bid to become the  Democratic candidate for President.  Your past record on matters involving race is the best of anybody who’s running by far.  Perhaps even more importantly, your record on economics, the environment, and peace demonstrate that your policies will be best for all Americans including people of color. Still, when it comes to racism, which tragically remains alive and well, you haven’t been as sensitive as you could and should be.  You have failed to respond specifically to police killings of unarmed black people, the wealth and influence gap between blacks and whites, and the scourge of gun violence.  Could you please address these issues now?

He has a perfect voting record and a 100% on the NAACP report card http://action.naacp.org/page/-/washington%20bureau/113Congress/VERMONT2.pdf
Perhaps it’s just a simple case that he has had less opportunity in the past few years to talk to that Audience , I know he has made comments, Vermont isn’t like other places. Can we give the candidates a chance? I personally believe he gets it unlike some other Democrats.

Several days after the above, Sanders called for police reform in light of Sandra Bland’s arrest and subsequent death. “This video of the arrest of Sandra Bland shows totally outrageous police behavior,” Sanders said in a statement released late on Tuesday night. “No one should be yanked from her car, thrown to the ground, assaulted and arrested for a minor traffic stop. The result is that three days later she is dead in her jail cell.”

Sanders added, “This video highlights once again why we need real police reform. People should not die for a minor traffic infraction. This type of police abuse has become an all-too-common occurrence for people of color and it must stop.”

Personally, I suspect Sandra Bland would not have been stopped if she had Texas license plates & was White. However, when you are the subject of a traffic stop it is foolish & perhaps criminal to refuse to put out your cigarette, you don’t point anything at the cop (camera or otherwise), and it is foolish to give lip. It takes two to Tango and it appears Sandra was entirely too tightly wound for her own good. Even a White guy like me can’t get away with how she acted. That said, I question that her cellphone is now missing, when she might have ingested pot, and how she ended up dead.
